About Cathay Pacific and Their Fleets
Cathay Pacific was formed in 1946 by Sydney de Kantzoq and Roy Farrell. Cathay used to be the medieval name for China and Roy Farrell envisioned flying over the Pacific Ocean one day and that is how the company got its name. Cathay Pacific’s main hub is based out of Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific has been named Airline of the Year more than any other airline in the world. Since Skytrax started giving the award in 2001, Cathay Pacific has won the award four times. Only two other airlines have won the award twice. In addition, Hong Kong International Airport which is Cathay Pacific’s base airport has been voted best airport in the world eight times including
the last three years.
The Airbus A350 is their most modern and latest aircraft when they received it in 2016. It currently operates these new planes on flights to Auckland, London and Dusseldorf. In 2016, Cathay Pacific’s last 747 took off for Tokyo and this put an end to the 747 existence that started way back in 1979. The 747 used to be called the “Queen of the Skies” but is slowly fading from existence as there are more efficient planes such as
the 787 Dreamliner or the A350. Cathay Pacific didn’t get their first jet until 1964 which they needed to stay competitive in the industry. The Convair 880 may have been their first jet but they have been constantly growing their fleet. Cathay flights used to take off and land from the famous Kai Tak airport which was located in the heart of the city and known for its spectacular quick and steep landings. The runways were located extremely close to the crowded harbor and densely populated areas of Western Kowloon. Pilots would make a dramatic 47 degree turn to line up to the runway and make the descent. The exciting and breathtaking turn over the
city was affectionately named the “Kai Tak Heart Attack”. However, the airport closed in 1998 and the very next day the very first nonstop transpolar flight landed at the new Chek Lap Kok International Airport arriving from JFK in New York. This route is still in existence today and is Cathay’s longest flight at just over 16 hours to cover this 8,000+ kilometer flight.
